They had a tight knot cedar, which the lady on the phone said, in her opinion, was stronger than regular pine.
As part of my regular routine, I picked up Big Miss from school, then we went on various errands.
Stopped at the pharmacy, dropped off refill requests.
Went to health food store for more Rhus Tox & Belladonna. (30x strength)
Then we went to the hardware store, bought 100' of a para-cord like rope, 4-20' pieces of 3/8 rebar for me to weld up tomato cages, and 6 of the 1"x6"x8' cedar boards.
On the way out of the lumber yard, I realized I needed food for my birds, Bender & Fry.
So I stopped at the feed store right across from the lumber yard.
Then we went back to the pharmacy to pick up the Rx, and then went home.
We unloaded the car, and I went back to work and Ellie went shopping.
After I got frustrated trying to get the damn freakin' code to build the static i686 library I needed, I went and cut the boards for the bed frame.
I bought the boards because, after sleeping on the new mattress for a few weeks, I realized my original estimated strength of the 1/2" cedar paneling wasn't good enough to handle a 26" span. The paneling was dipping between the spans and making my back hurt, which affected my sleep... really badly.
So these 1"x 's were bought to span the 26" span, and basically create smaller 7 1/2" spans for the paneling.
These cedar boards are what is called S1S2, which are supposed to be planed on only one broad side of the board and both edges.
Since these weren't going to be visible, I just cut them and installed them without any finish.
Well, in the middle of cutting the boards, I realized that instead of being 1"x6", they were 1"x8".
These wider boards work just fine, and created a smaller span of 4 1/4" instead of the original estimated span.
Ellie helped me to flip the new mattress up on its edge, and pulled up the original cedar panels, placed three 1x's on top of the 26" spans with two screws to keep them from moving (not necessary, but Ellie insisted), and we put everything back down.
At first the whole house strongly smelled like the new cedar boards.
This isn't a bad smell. In fact, most people enjoy the smell of cedar.
Well, then trying to sleep with that strong odor was a bit too much for me.
I laid awake for almost two hours before I fell to sleep. Every night, usually, I listen to at least one CBS Mystery Radio Theater shows. These shows are approx 60 minutes long when commercials haven't been edited out. (Radio commercials for grocery stores and food products are pretty funny to listen to, and stupid too.)
It seemed to me, that every time I woke up, it was because of the smell of the fresh cedar boards.
The boards are kiln dried, so it's not like they're green and could potentially squeeze out sap or water.
But, I kept smelling the freakin cedar!
BUT!!!When I did sleep, I slept good.
That's a pretty big butt. -Pearl (Finding Nemo)
In fact last night and this morning, were the first time since we got the new mattress that my back didn't hurt me at all!
I'm looking forward to going to bed again tonight!
I bet, that I won't hurt sleeping again, which means I'll get up, better!
For me though, I just hope the smell of my fresh Wood won't keep me up tonight...
Unless Ellie's in the mood!
